Tulane Green Wave vs. Louisiana Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns
My Bookie line: Tulane -3.5
Flying under the general college football radar was the firing of Tulane offensive coordinator Doug Ruse three days after the team’s 1-point win in the regular season finale vs. Navy. Head coach Willie Fritz has hired Memphis associate head coach/tight ends coach Will Hall to replace him. Doesn’t sound like much, on the surface, but Hall was Louisiana-Lafayette’s offensive coordinator last season. Although the Ragin Cajuns’ staff was overhauled when first-season head coach Billy Napier came from Arizona State, Hall still knows stuff. A couple of run-heavy offenses make the trek from their home bases in Louisiana. Tulane snaps it for a run 65.5% of the time, ULL 62.2%. Tulane’s method has produced only 17.9 first downs per game, ULL’s 20.4. But, when Tulane beat Memphis 40-24 in late September, the Green Wave held the nation’s #4 rushing offense in check, partly by holding onto the football for 39:36 themselves. They kept it away from, and contained, Darrell Henderson and Patrick Taylor, Jr., who combined for 37 rushing touchdowns this season.
